Description:

YANKEES CAPTURE NEW BERNE, NORTH CARONIA
War date A.L.S. of Pvt. Noah Deaton of the 26th North Carolina, 2pp. 4to., Goldsboro, N.C., Mar. 17, 1862 to his father. he writes, in part: "...I am in the hospital at Goldsboro. I have been sick since the last week but I am about able to go back to my company. There was a hard battle camp on the 14th. The enemy came up the river on the 13th and shelled the 35 Regt. out of the trenches wounded two of Capt. Kelly's men... Then the 35 & 26 regiments retreated back to the entrenchments at our camp where we had about 8 regt's entrenched and they remained in the trenches all that evening and night. Notwithstanding it was a very rainy night the fight commenced at two o'clock... [there is no way?] to tell how long it lasted. The 26th regt. stood their ground until all the rest of our men had retreated and crossed the bridge at Newbern and set it on fire to keep the enemy from proceeding them and cut our regt. off down below Newbern and they had to swim the river above the town and after a long travel they reached Kinston yesterday. Our company lost Capt. Martin, he was shot through the head... and while the surgeon was dressing his wound he was through the head... Capt. Kelly had 5 of his men wounded and 1 killed, William B. Monroe. The enemy has possession of Newbern and our forces has fell back to Kinston and taken their stand and one reinforcing at which place they intend making Deadly stand. I fear to make the attempt to give to give any more particulars at present for some of what I have said maybee [sic] contradicted bu[t] all the main points are true--- I was sick and in the camp that morning and the Dr had told me to go to some hospital tents about 1/2 mile off but neglected to go until the fight begun I remained in the camp about 15 minutes and the Bullets were flying around me like hail but providently made my escape safe I came very near not get[t]ing to the car in time if I had mis[s]ed it the yankees would have got me for I don't think I cou[l]d have travel[l]ed to Newbern there was two men left in the hospital at Newbern ... " Federal troops captured New Berne, N.C. on March 14, opening a new base for inland expeditions. Toned folds obscure several words of text, else very good.
