Description:

HARRASSING SOUTHERN CITIZENS USING NEGRO TROOPS
A.L.S, 3pp. 8vo., [n.p., near Beaufort, SC], Oct. 30, 1865 in which citizen R. H. Gifford writes to Col. H. B. Clitz in Hilton Head. In part: "...Lt. Wood, comd'r at Beech Branch came over to our Place in search of some vagrants; said Lieutenant found a woman on the place with some stolen sugar cane & then tied her up for half an hour; turned her loose and left...an armed Party of eight or ten men of said Lieutenant's command entered our yard...wanted to know where was the man that swung up that woman...said colored troops said that they did not believe that their Commander had done the deed...they then left the yard cursing at a rapid rate...Are we (Citizens) to be held accountable by Negroe Troops for a Deed done by their Commander...Lt. Wood said he had issued an order saying if one of his men was found out of Camp with his Arms...he should be shot...One of my neighbors met one of Lt. Woods' men the evening previous...some distance from camp with his Gun. I reported the case...similar atrocious outrage was committed by a party of the Brighton Negroe Garrison...some of them shot one of our best and most peaceable citizens...stolen hogs from free negroes...others are seen in the field - among the wenches...nothing but ignorant men, in arms & idleness...". With various dockets ordering that the accusations be investigated. Very good.
