Description:

FIGHTING THE YANKEES IN NORTH CAROLINA
War date A.L.S. of Pvt. Noah Deaton, 4pp. 12mo., Goldsboro, N.C., Dec. 22, 1862 in pencil to a friend: "...We were bound fro Kinston, N.C. but before getting there the enemy had driven the small force we had there away and had taken the place. We were halted at Moseley hall for one night learning next morning that the enemy were going up the west side of the Nuse river. We set fire to 150 bales of cotton and turned back to Goldsboro and reached there at night. The enemy succeeded in burning the rail road bridge and cut the telegraph wire on the Wilmington rail road but our forces arrived in time to save the county bridge and Goldsboro. After a sharp fight the enemy fell back and it was good for them that they did for Gov. Vance and Genl. Smith would have met them with some 15,000 men. The enemy destroyed all the bridges on the river as they came up. We are stationed at the bridge on the east side of the river. Our men are vigorously at work rebuilding the bridge. The weather is very cold and we are without tents. Some think we will soon go back to Petersburg but the truth is we don't know how long we will stay or at what hour we will leave here or where we will go to... " Moderate toning at folds, else very good.
