Description:

WINSTON S. CHURCHILL
(1874 - 1965) British Prime Minister who led England through the Blitz and orchestrated the British liberation of occupied Europe and Germany. Churchill is today considered perhaps the greatest statesman of this century. T.L.S. as Leader of the Opposition in the House of Commons on Churchill's Hyde Park letterhead, 2pp., large 8vo., Monte-Carlo, January 5, 1948, a letter to personal friend and Belgian attaché Andre de Staercke. In part: "... I see in the newspapers that I am reported to have dined with the Duke of Windsor to meet King Leopold. This is not true. I told the Duke of Windsor that I did not want to get involved in talks about Belgian affairs and he did not therefore invite King Leopold to the dinner which he gave to King Michael of Rumania and his family. I did not think it was worth having a correction put in the newspapers..." Churchill had publicly clashed with King Leopold, essentially accusing him in a 1940 House of Commons speech of surrendering to the Germans in the middle of an English defensive stand at the Leopold's request. De Staercke, personal secretary to King Leopold's brother, backed Churchill's assessment. Lightly toned with a hole punch and minor soiling at top right corner from a paper clip, else very good.
