Description:

WALTHER FUNK CLAIMS NO INVOLVEMENT IN FUNDING THE WAR
WALTHER FUNK (1890-1960) Nazi Minister of Economics who confiscated goods of imprisoned Jews to the Reichsbank via Himmler. Sentenced to life imprisonment. Fine content partly-printed D.S. 'Walther Funk' in pencil, 1p. legal folio, Nuremberg, Jan. 10, 1946, a submission to the International Military Tribunal, a 'Defendant's Application for Summons for Witness' asking that LUTZ GRAF SCHWERIN VON KROSIGH (1887-1977), Minister of Finance (1932-45) and de facto Chancellor of Germany in May 1945, be called to testify in Funk's defense, and further suggesting that von Krosigh was: 'presumably in American imprisonment'. Funk claims that von Krosigh: '...[could] testify that the moment the Defendant Funk assumed direction of the Reichsbank, the authority to determine the amount of Reich notes to be discounted by the Reichsbank was withdrawn from the President of the Reichsbank and was thenceforth exercised by Hitler himself...from which the Defendant Funk was excluded...that the proposal for a war emergency levy in August 1939 was not made by the Defendant Funk, but by...Count Schwerin-Krosigk...that the preparation for financing the war and for a civilian war economy...at that time Funk could delay those preparations no longer, and that prior to that time Funk had not been occupied with those preparations...' Also signed by Funk's chief defense counsel, DR. FRITZ SAUTER. Mounted, sold with the official translation, also mounted. Very good. In fact, Funk was intimately involved in all major Reichsbank transactions, and had the full trust and backing of Hitler. This document originates from the files of Hans Werner, Director of Printing for the International Military Tribunal in Nuremberg. It was his task to publish the 42-volume record of the trial using this document and scores of others. Following completion of his task, Werner was permitted to retain possession of the documents, which were never tagged as evidence. They were then sold by autograph expert Charles Hamilton in his auctions, in 1979.
