Description:

WALTHER FUNK
(1890 - 1960) Nazi Minister of Economics who confiscated goods of imprisoned Jews to the Reichsbank via Himmler. Sentenced to life imprisonment. Good content A.L.S. 'Walther Funk', 1p. 4to., written while a prisoner in Nuremberg, [n.d., ca. late 1945], to the General Secretary of the International Military Tribunal, in indelible pencil. In part: '...Subject: Retaining of Legal Counsel in the trial which has been opened against me. I request that I may retain as my counsel: 1.) Attorney Dr Franz Ludwig, Bresau...formerly a major in the Heereswaffenamt (Office of Chief of Ordnance) (General Leeb) and probably now in a P.W. camp...' Funk also suggests that if Ludwig is not available, Dr. Friedrich Grimm or one of three others named be employed. These include Dr. Fritz Sauter, who would ultimately be given the position. Mounted to heavy stock, very good. This document originates from the files of Hans Werner, Director of Printing for the International Military Tribunal in Nuremberg. It was his task to publish the 42-volume record of the trial using this document and scores of others. Following completion of his task, Werner was permitted to retain possession of the documents, which were never tagged as evidence. They were then sold by autograph expert Charles Hamilton in his auctions, in 1979.
