Description:

WALTHER FUNK CLAIMS HE SUPPORTED CURRENCIES OF OCCUPIED COUNTRIES
WALTHER FUNK (1890-1960) Nazi Minister of Economics who confiscated goods of imprisoned Jews to the Reichsbank via Himmler. Sentenced to life imprisonment. Fine content partly-printed D.S. 'Walther Funk' in pencil, 1p. legal folio, Nuremberg, Jan. 10, 1946, a submission to the International Military Tribunal: 'Defendant's Application for Summons for Witness' asking that EMIL PUHL (1889-1952), Vice President of the Reichsbank who was also responsible for moving the Nazis' gold, be called to testify in Funk's defense. Puhl, whom Funk believes is '...probably in an American prison or camp in Frankfurt...' is considered valuable to Funk's defense as his testimony could buttress the contention: '...that the accused Funk stood out constantly, throughout the whole duration of the war against the devaluation of currencies in the occupied countries and in others with which Germany had close economic connections, as well as against financial manipulations of any kind, and indeed, with the result that these countries were saved from being stripped, by fixed exchange rates...Funk always adopted the standpoint...that these debts should be cleared by deliveries of goods...these debts should be covered by a European loan issued by Germany...that Funk was constantly striving to stabilise the exchange rates of occupied territories, in order to stop the arbitrary lowering of such rates...that Funk tried to cover occupation costs as quickly as possible by trade...' Also signed by Funk's chief defense counsel, DR. FRITZ SAUTER. Mounted to heavy stock with an unrelated document on the verso, very good. In actuality, a good portion of occupation costs were covered by Funk's 'trade' in stolen gold and other valuables from Jews, right down to the gold teeth extracted from the Nazis' victims and shipped to the Reichsbank for 'processing' with the receipts deposited in the 'Max Heileger' accounts. Later testimony would also prove his involvement in the Reichsbank's other illicit activities.
