Description:

WALTHER FUNK DENIES VISITING CONCENTRATION CAMPS
WALTHER FUNK (1890-1960) Nazi Minister of Economics who confiscated goods of imprisoned Jews to the Reichsbank via Himmler. Sentenced to life imprisonment. Fine content partly-printed D.S. 'Walther Funk' in indelible pencil, 1p. legal folio, Nuremberg [n.d., ca. late 1945-early 1946], a request that a summons be issued to Dr. Victor Schwedler, a Berlin director of the Reichsbank, to testify on Funk's behalf. In part: '...This witness can confirm that, for years, he was constantly in the company of the accused Funk, especially on journeys, (when they traveled together), that in particular he also made all the arrangements for the accused Funk's journeys and that...he can state that...Funk has never visited a concentration camp, and in particular, not the one at Dachau...' Funk further states that this testimony would be used to refute the deposition of Dr. Franz Blaha, an inmate at Dachau who claimed in his deposition that Funk had come to the camp with a large group of visitors. Blaha apparently later testified that his information on Funk had come from other prisoners. Mounted to heavy stock, very good. This document originates from the files of Hans Werner, Director of Printing for the International Military Tribunal in Nuremberg. It was his task to publish the 42-volume record of the trial using this document and scores of others. Following completion of his task, Werner was permitted to retain possession of the documents, which were never tagged as evidence. They were then sold by autograph expert Charles Hamilton in his auctions, in 1979.
