(UNION NAVY) SAMUEL P. LEE AND AUGUSTUS L. CASE
SAMUEL P. LEE (1812 - 1897) Union rear admiral and a relative of Robert E. Lee who commanded various blockading squadrons and was active at Vicksburg. War-date manuscript L.S. ‘S. P. Lee', 1p. 4to., Hampton Roads, Dec. 12, 1862, directing paymaster J. Henry Sellman of the experimental ironclad USS GALENA to proceed to Baltimore to collect a draft from the U.S. Treasury, to be used to pay the crew of the Galena. Lee transmits a partly-printed, 4.25 x 4.5 in. Bay Line Steamers ticket for transport from Fortress Monroe to Baltimore, signed by Lee's fleet captain, future rear admiral AUGUSTUS LUDLOW CASE (1813-1893). Lee signs at the conclusion of his order in black ink. Shows original mailing folds, slightly ragged at the left edge, while the ticket shows a horizontal fold and some resultant ink transfer from Case's signature, otherwise both pieces in very good to fine condition overall.
