(UNION NAVY) SAMUEL P. LEE
(1812 - 1897) U.S. Navy rear admiral and a relative of Robert E. Lee, he commanded the North Atlantic blockading squadron and was active at Vicksburg. Manuscript L.S. ‘S. P. Lee' as commodore and senior member of the Board of Naval Examiners, 1p. 4to., Hartford, Jan. 24, 1867, to U.S. Navy surgeon William Grier, ordering his correspondent to report to him in Washington, D. C. Lee signs in black in at the conclusion, with his rank and position added in another hand. He adds an A.E.S. at the top edge, acknowledging that Grier reported to him on Jan. 29, again signing in black ink and adding his rank ‘Commodore & Presiding Member'. Endorsed along the left edge by a paymaster, acknowledging reimbursement to Grier for his travel expenses. Shows original mailing folds, faintly toned at the edges, with a mounting strip to the verso on the left edge, and with a small tear at the top edge slightly affecting Lee's endorsement, otherwise in very good condition overall.
