Description:

(UNION NAVY) SAMUEL F. DUPONT
(1803 - 1865) Union admiral who commanded the South Atlantic Blockading Squadron and who was instrumental in the taking of Port Royal and Beaufort, but saw his career ruined after the failure of an assault by ironclads under his command against Charleston Harbor. Good association, war-date manuscript L.S., 1p. 4to., Port Royal, Aug. 11, 1862, to an H. R. Billings, acting master of the sloop USS DALE. Writing from aboard his flagship, the steam frigate USS WABASH, Du Pont orders Billings to report to future commodore WILLIAM T. TRUXTUN (1824-1887) for duty aboard the steamer USS ALABAMA. He signs ‘S. F. Du Pont' in black ink at the conclusion, with his rank and station added in another hand. Truxtun in turn signs his endorsement on the verso, confirming that Billings reported aboard the Alabama the following day. Shows original mailing folds with slight splits thereto at the right edge, with a few scattered spots of foxing, otherwise in very good to fine condition.
