JENKINS (1811-1893) U.S. Navy Rear Admiral, commanded the steam sloops USS WACHUSETT, USS ONEIDA, USS RICHMOND and USS HARTFORD, and participated in the capture of Port Hudson and the Battle of Mobile Bay. A group of six fine association documents, all immediately postwar and all related to Jenkins' role as chief of the Bureau of Navigation, includes: Manuscript L.S., 1p. 4to., Washington, D.C., Sep. 25, 1865, granting a leave of absence to then-Lt. Commander Henry L. Howison, later a Rear Admiral himself. Jenkins signs at the conclusion in black ink, with future Rear Admiral WILLIAM R. TAYLOR (1811-1889) executing an A.E.S. to the left, affirming that the letter was delivered. WITH: Partly-printed D.S., 1p. legal folio, [Washington, D.C.], Oct. 20, 1865, ordering 1st Asst. Engineer Emery J. Brooks to report to Rear Admiral SILAS H. STRINGHAM (1798-1876) at the Boston Navy Yard for duty as assistant to Chief Engineer William H. Shock. Jenkins signs in black ink at the conclusion, with Stringham signing an endorsement below ‘S. H. Stringham' in black ink, confirming that Brooks has reported for duty, and with Shock adding his signed endorsement at bottom left confirming the same. WITH: Partly-printed D.S., 1p. legal folio, [Washington, D.C.], Dec. 21, 1865, ordering 2nd Asst. Engineer Arthur M. Clements to report to future Rear Admiral WILLIAM RADFORD (1809-1890) for duty aboard his command, the gunboat USS ASCUTNEY. Jenkins signs at the conclusion in black (ink somewhat brushed), with Radford signing two endorsements below, the first forwarding the order and the second confirming that Clements has reported as ordered, both as ‘Wm Radford'. WITH: Partly-printed D.S., 1p. legal folio, [Washington, D.C.], Sep. 19, 1867, detaching the aforementioned Arthur M. Clements from duty aboard the ‘double-ender' gunboat USS TACONY. Jenkins signs at the conclusion in black ink, with Rear Admiral JOSEPH LANMAN (1811-1874) signing an endorsement forwarding the order at top left. WITH: Partly-printed D.S., 1p. legal folio, [Washington, D.C.], Dec. 2, 1867, ordering the aforementioned Arthur M. Clements to report to future Rear Admiral AUGUSTUS H. KILTY (1807-1879) for duty. Jenkins signs at the conclusion in black ink, with Kilty executing an A.E.S. at bottom right, affirming that Clements has reported for duty. WITH: Partly-printed D.S., 1p. legal folio, [Washington, D.C.], Nov. 19, 1868, ordering the aforementioned Emery J. Brooks to report for duty aboard the USS FRANKLIN. Jenkins signs at the conclusion in black ink, with an endorsement at bottom signed by Rear Admiral JOHN RODGERS (1812-1882) as Commandant of the Boston Navy Yard. The verso additionally bears the signed endorsements of Rear Admirals STEPHEN DECTAUR TRENCHARD (1818-1883), commander of the USS RHODE ISLAND when she lost the USS MONITOR under tow during a storm, and WILLIAM E. LEROY (1818-1888). All six pieces show original folds and are mildly toned, otherwise in very good condition.
