Good lot of five items signed by notable Union generals, includes: THOMAS K. SMITH (1820-1887) Union brigadier general, Grant's chief-of-staff at Vicksburg. As a division commander in the Army of the Tennessee, Smith assisted Banks during the Red River campaign. Good association war-date A.E.S. ‘Tho. K. Smith' on a 3 x 4 in. slip of paper cut from a document, [n.p.], March 18, 1863, forwarding said document and adding his rank as colonel commanding the 2nd Brigade, 2nd Division, 15th Army Corps. Above appears the A.E.S. of AMERICUS VESPUCIUS RICE (1835-1904) colonel of Ohio volunteers who lost his leg at Kennesaw Mountain and was appointed brigadier general at wars end, Youngs Point, LA, March 16, 1863, in full: ‘Approved, & recommended that the resignation may be accepted, as the applicant has been unfit for military duty for at least 6 months.' He signs ‘A V Rice', adding his rank ‘Lt Col'. Shows archival tape residue to the verso, otherwise in very good to fine condition. WITH: GEORGE L. ANDREWS (1828 - 1899) Union brigadier general who fought at Port Hudson and commanded negro soldiers of the Corps d'Afrique. Scarce signature in black ink ‘Geo. L. Andrews', cut from another sheet and pasted to a 3.5 x 1.5 in. slip of paper, itself cut from a larger document, with the place and date ‘Washington D C June 5 1864' partially written over the added signature to form a war-date endorsement, the entirety 3.5 x 1.75 in. Mounted, somewhat toned, otherwise in very good condition. WITH: JAMES S. BRISBIN (1837 - 1892) Union brigadier general, wounded twice at First Bull Run, organized the 5th United States Colored Cavalry and was again wounded during the Battle of Mansfield. Bold, close-cut signature in black ink on a 0.75 x 4.25 in. slip of paper, adding his postwar regular army rank ‘Major 2d U S Cavalry'. In fine condition. WITH: JACOB G. LAUMAN (1813 – 1867) Union brigadier general who led forces at Ft. Donelson and Shiloh. Bold signature ‘J. G. Lauman' in black ink on a 3 x 1.25 in. slip of paper, adding his rank ‘Brig Genl'. Shows archival tape residue on the verso, otherwise in very good condition. WITH: GEORGE F. MCGINNIS (1826-1910) Union brigadier general who served with distinction at the Battles of Fort Donelson, Shiloh, Corinth, and Vicksburg. Signature ‘G. F. McGinnis' in black ink on a 4 x 1.25 in. slip of paper, adding his rank. Shows tape residue and pencil notations to the verso, otherwise in very good to fine condition. Five pieces.
