UNION GENERALS AND OFFICERS (5)
Good lot of five items signed by notable Union generals and officers, includes: JAMES G. BLUNT (1826 - 1881) Union major general, defeated by Quantrill's Raiders at the Battle of Baxter Springs in Kansas in 1863, but is considered to have served well the next year as a division commander during Price's Raid in Missouri. Large, bold signature ‘Jas G. Blunt' in black ink on a 6 x 1.25 in. slip of paper, adding his rank ‘Major Genl U S Vol'. Mildly toned, shows a horizontal fold and archival tape residue to the verso, otherwise in very good condition. WITH: EDWARD M. MCCOOK (1833-1909) Union brigadier general of cavalry, one of the ‘Fighting McCook's'. He fought with distinction at Perryville, Chickamauga, the Atlanta Campaign and crushed Forrest at Selma, but was soundly defeated by Wheeler at Brown's Mill. Signature in black ink on a 3 x 2 in. card, adding his rank ‘Bt. Major Genl. U. S. Vols.' Shows adhesive stains, tape residue and a pencil identifying inscription on the verso, otherwise in very good to fine condition. WITH: JOSEPH J. REYNOLDS (1822-1899) Union Brigadier General who repulsed the Confederates at Cheat Mountain and held that portion of West Virginia for the Union. He also served at Chickamauga and Chattanooga. Signature ‘J. J. Reynolds' in black ink on a 3.25 x 2 in. slip of paper, adding his rank ‘Maj Genl.' Slightly soiled, with archival tape residue and a pencil identifying inscription to the verso, otherwise in very good condition. WITH: WILLIAM W. BELKNAP (1829 - 1890) Union brigadier general and Secretary of War in Grant's administration; impeached by the Senate for accepting bribes from Indian posts. Bold signature ‘Wm. W. Belknap' in black ink on a 3.5 x 2.25 in. card, adding his title ‘Secy. Of War' and the date ‘Aug. 28. 1872'. in fine condition. WITH: BENJAMIN F. LARNED (1794-1862) Career U.S. Army officer, served as Paymaster General at the rank of colonel until his death. Franking signature ‘Benj. F. Larned' in black ink on a 5.75 x 3.25 in. envelope from the Paymaster General's Office, addressed to a P. J. Overbaugh, paymaster of new York State Militia stationed in Baltimore, and postmarked July, 3, 1861. Worn at the edges, with archival tape residue to the verso, in very good condition overall. Five pieces.
