Description:

UNION GENERALS (5)
Good lot of five items signed by notable Union generals, includes: JAMES H. LEDLIE (1832 – 1882) Union brigadier general best known for his dereliction of duty at the Battle of the Crater during the Siege of Petersburg. Ledlie did not brief his troops beforehand and they entered the crater out of curiosity instead of moving safely around its rim, resulting in a slaughter. Meantime, Ledlie sat behind the lines in a drunken stupor. Signature in black ink on a 5 x 2 in. slip of paper cut from the conclusion of a letter, adding a sentiment and his rank ‘Brig Gen Vols'. Shows a vertical fold, with archival tape residue and a pencil identifying inscription on the verso, otherwise in fine condition. WITH: LEWIS G. ARNOLD (1817-1871) Union brigadier general of volunteers, commanded the Department of Florida and later New Orleans but was incapacitated there by a stroke while reviewing troops. Lengthy war-date A.E.S. on a 3.25 x 7.75 in. panel detached from a document, in full: ‘Hd. Qrs. Western Districk Dept of the South Pensacola Fla. June 23 1862 Respectfully forwarded through the Adjt Genl's Office. I recommend 2d Lieut Entwistle for promotion to 1st Lt 6th Rgt N. Y. V. for his long and faithful service in that Regt, his good conduct, zeal, and attention to duty.' He signs ‘L. G. Arnold' in black ink at the conclusion, adding his rank ‘Brig Genl U. S. V. Commdg'. Ragged at the left edge where detached, with archival tape marks to the verso, otherwise in very good condition. WITH: MASON BRAYMAN (1813-1895) Union brigadier general and later Governor of the Idaho Territory, fought at Fort Donelson, Shiloh and Vicksburg. Signature ‘M Brayman' in black ink on a 3 x 2 in. card, adding his rank ‘Brev. Maj. Genl U. S. Vols.' Shows adhesive stains, mounting remnants and a pencil identifying inscription on the verso, otherwise in very good condition. WITH: GEORGE C. MCKEE (1837-1890) Union brigadier general, wounded Fort Donelson, Shiloh and Vicksburg, commanded four regiments of Black troops. Later congressman for Mississippi. Scarce signature ‘Geo. C. McKee' in black ink on a 3.75 x 2 in. card, adding his state ‘Miss'. Shows mounting remnants and a pencil identifying inscription on the verso, otherwise in very good to fine condition. WITH: JAMES W. RIPLEY (1794-1870) Union brigadier general and Chief of Ordnance. Some modern historians argue his reluctance as Chief of Ordnance to largely adopt breech loading and repeating rifles as standard issue in the early days of the war lengthened the conflict considerably. Uncle of Confederate general Roswell S. Ripley. Bold signature ‘Jas. W. Ripley' in black ink on a 5 x 2.25 in. slip of paper, adding his rank ‘Br. Genl. U. S. A.' In fine condition. Five pieces.
