Good lot of five items signed by notable Union generals, includes: JULIUS STAHEL (1825-1912), Union major general who commanded cavalry in West Virginia, awarded the Medal of Honor for his gallantry at Piedmont. Signature ‘Jul. Stahel' in black ink on a 3 x 2 in. card, adding his rank ‘Maj. Genl'. Very faintly toned, else very good to fine. WITH: JOHN W. SPRAGUE (1817-1893), Union brigadier general who received the Medal of Honor for gallantry at the Battle of Decatur during the Atlanta Campaign. Bold signature ‘J. W. Sprague' in black ink on a 5 x 1.5 in. slip irregularly cut from a piece of card stock, adding his rank ‘Brig. Genl. U. S. V.' Shows archival tape residue to the verso, else very good. WITH: STEPHEN A. HURLBUT (1815-1882), Union major general, the only one to have been born in South Carolina. Later was a founding member of the Grand Army of the Republic, a veteran's organization for those who served in the Civil War, and a diplomat. War-date signed endorsement ‘S. A. Hurlbut' in black ink on a 3 x 3.75 in. slip of paper cut from a larger document, with another hand adding ‘Head Quarters 16 Army Corps Memphis Tennessee 12 June 1863' and his rank ‘Major General'. Shows a pencil identifying inscription at lower right, else very good. WITH: LEWIS C. HUNT (1824–1886), Union brigadier general at the siege of Yorktown and severely wounded at Fair Oaks, he later fought at Kingston and Whitehall. Signature ‘L. C. Hunt' in black ink on a 3 x 2 in. card, adding his postwar regular army rank ‘Major 14th Inf'y' and ‘Brig. Genl. Vols.' Shows a pencil identifying inscription and archival tape residue on the verso, else very good. WITH: EDWARD W. STANLY (1810-1872), North Carolina politician who served as military governor of the state with the rank of brigadier general, resigned in disagreement with Lincoln over the Emancipation Proclamation. Bold signature ‘Edw. Stanly' in black ink on a 5.25 x 2.25 in. slip of paper, adding ‘Washington North Carolina'. Shows a pencil biographical inscription and archival tape residue on the verso, else very good. Five pieces. Sold with period frontispiece engravings of Stahel and Sprague, suitable for framing.
