Good group of four items signed by union generals, includes: ALFRED PLEASONTON (1824-1897), Union major general who commanded the Cavalry Corps of the Army of the Potomac during the Gettysburg Campaign, defeated J. E. B. Stuart in the largest cavalry battle of the war at Brandy Station, and defeated Sterling Price at Mine Creek, effectively ending the war in Missouri. Close-cut signature ‘A. Pleasonton' in black ink on a 3 x 1 in. slip of paper, adding his rank ‘Maj General', Shows a faint pencil identifying inscription and mounting remnants to the verso, else very good. WITH: CHARLES J. PAINE (1833-1916), Union brigadier general, led a division of Black troops at Port Hudson and New Market Heights, then engaged at Battle of Wilmington. Signature ‘Chas. J. Paine' in black ink on a 4 x 2.5 in. card, adding his brevet rank ‘Bvt Maj Genl Vols' and ‘New Berne N.C. Oct. 3, 1865'. Very faintly toned, shows archival tape mounting remnants to the verso, else very good to fine. WITH: JAMES SHIELDS (1810-1879), Union major general and the only person in U.S. history to serve as a Senator from three different states. Signature ‘Jas Shields' in black ink on a 5 x 3 in. slip of paper, adding ‘Carrollton Mo July 25th 1878'. Fine. WITH: HENRY HASTINGS SIBLEY (1811-1891), American fur trader, the first governor of Minnesota, and a Union brigadier general of volunteers, spent the Civil War enacting military reprisals against the Sioux. Signature in black ink on a 7.25 x 1.75 in. slip of paper, adding ‘Mendota Minnesota'. Shows a pencil biographical inscription and mounting remnants to the verso, else very good to fine. Sold with period frontispiece engravings of Shields and Sibley.
