Good lot of four items signed by Union generals of the Civil War, includes: JOHN W. PHELPS (1813-1885) Union brigadier general and the first to attempt to recruit liberated slaves, causing the Confederates to declare him an "outlaw". Good content A.L.S., 1p. 4to., [n.p.], March 31, 1862, to aide-de-camp Capt. Haggerty. In part: "The prisoners released the other night - day before yesterday - were Private Timothy Reardon, Mortimer Keating ... Rourke [all of the 26th mass. vols.]... the two first being confined for desertion..." Phelps signs at the conclusion in black ink, adding his rank "Brigr. Genl. 1st Brigade". Shows some folds, else very good. WITH: MANNING F. FORCE (1824-1899) Union brigadier general with Sherman at Atalanta, where he was shot in the face yet led his men on. A.L.S. "M.F. Force", 1p. 8vo., Cincinnati, March 14, 1888, to lawyer Charles P. Greenough, returning the excess of an overpayment. He signs at the conclusion in black ink. Shows original mailing folds and mounting remnants to the verso, else very good. WITH: JAMES A. HARDIE (1823-1876) Union major general on the staffs of McClellan and Burnside, Judge Advocate General of the Army of the Potomac. Manuscript L.S. "Jas. A. Hardie" on War Department letterhead, 1p. 8vo., Washington, D.C., Nov. 17, 1865, to Maj. William H. Wiegel, acknowledging receipt of a recent letter and promising to write in detail soon. Hardie signs at the conclusion in black ink. Shows original mailing folds and a single spot of soiling, else very good. WITH: SIMON G. GRIFFIN (1824-1902) Union brigadier general, fought from Bull Run to Petersburg, including at Antietam and Fredericksburg. A.L.S., 1p. 8vo., Keene, New Hampshire, April 29, 1889, to Gen. Henry M. Cist, thanking his correspondent for his letter of recommendation. Griffin signs at the conclusion in black ink. Shows original mailing folds and some toning, with mounting remnants and a pencil identifying inscription on the verso, else very good. Four pieces.
