TITANIC HERO IS PAID HIS WAGES
Excessively rare and important D.S., 1p. 4to., May 13, 1912, an "Account of Wages" in which Titanic Able Bodied Seaman and Lookout Frank O. Evans, a hero in the tragedy, is paid his wages for service aboard the Titanic. The vessel is names at the top of the document, as is its captain, Edward J. Smith. Evans is shown as signing-on on April 10, 1912 and his date of discharge is shown as April 15, the day the vessel sank. He is paid for his six days of service, and is given a 26 day bonus for his travails, earning him a total of five pounds, six shillings, eight pence still due him. The document is initialed "J.D.P." signed by his new captain, on behalf of the "White Star Line". Split at folds with a small bit of paper loss at fold junctures, light soiling, else overall very good. The 27 year-old sailor testified before Congress on the seventh day of hearings. Evans was with First Officer William Murdoch (later drowned) loading Lifeboat No. 10, and assisted a baker who was catching children tossed to them from the ship's deck. Their boat loaded with sixty women and children, Evans then moved to Lifeboat No. 14 and returned to the site of the sinking, rescuing four more from the frigid waters. In his testimony, Evans described his rescue of the other survivors, in part: "...One died on the way back, sir. There were plenty of dead bodies about us...You couldn't hardly count them, sir. I was afraid to look over the sides because it might break my nerves down...After we left the wreckage we made sail to another boat that was in distress...There was one collapsible boat that we had in tow, and we went over to this one that was swamped, sir. Three dead persons were left there...".
