Description:

STOCKBRIDGE INDIANS SEEK TO OUST WHITES
Superb content manuscript L.S. by three Indians, 1p., 4to., New Stockbridge, NY, September 1816, to district attorney Thomas H. Hubbard. In part: "...most of us, poor Indians, feel very much pleased what we hear from the flying birds, that you are willing to assist us with all the powers of the State put in your hands to remove from among us the White people who have unlawfully got possession of our lands... this way of leasing out lots of our land has had a very evil tendency in discouraging, depressing &c our civilization and industry...Tis the direct way to our ruin. All our Chiefs and principal men have last winter remonstrated to the government...our request now is that you use your utmost influence to bring the punishment of the law upon them until they leave our Town. We entreat you to turn a deaf ear to all their entreaties and petitions. In doing this, Sir, you will bring much good upon us..." Signed at bottom by Indian representatives ABRAHAM PIZE JEHIRAHIM ABRAMS and DAVID SETH. Age toned, else very good. The Stockbridge Indians had relocated to New Stockbridge in Madison County, NY in 1780, but were frequently encroached-upon by whites, prompting a mass migration to Indiana and later Wisconsin.
