Description:

THREE SIOUX CHIEFS DESCRIBE A COUNCIL WITH GENERAL CARLIN AGAINST THEIR CURRENT INDIAN AGENT
An unusual manuscript D.S. 2pp. folio, Standing Rock Agency, Dakota Terr., Jan. 20, 1880, a sworn statement bearing the marks of Sioux Chiefs Billy Fat, High Bear, and Lone Dog, all testifying to a meeting held on January 4, 1880, with General Carlin. The principle topic of the council was the dissatisfaction of elements of the Sioux nation with their treatment by their present agent, and Carlin appears to have promised that the military would secure them better treatment. Their combined statement reads in part: "...Waldroff military Interpreter and Running Antelope invited us on the 4th of January, 1880 to go to Genl. Carlin's for a council and to get guns. We found about forty seven Indians gathered at Genl Carlins...he spoke to us about the guns he was giving to issue to us, then he said, Do you want another Agent We said haow! then Genl. Carlin told us he wrote instructed the Agent to treat as Kindly and the agent instead of obliging his orders he fights... remarking the Agent must be out of his head -- Genl Carlin then told us he would ask the Great Father to send us another Agent at once..." Billy Fat, High Bear, and Lone Dog each sign with an "x". Usual folds, file holes at top margin, otherwise very good.
