Description:

CHIEF THUNDER HAWK
Head Chief of the Uncpapa Sioux in the years after Little Big Horn. A 2pp. folio legal statement signed with his mark, Office of U.S. Indian Agent, Standing Rock Agency, D.T., Jany. 10, 1880, in which Thunderhawk testifies that he: "...was not at Genl. Carlin's Council on January 2nd, 1880...I have a claim of eighty acres and some cattle, work my claim and take care of my cattle. Some of my little Chiefs do not work, but lay about the military post and creating disturbances. The worst of these is Running Antelope who gives me plenty of trouble. He is a small chief; having but four families in his band ....He wants promotion and takes his present course for that purpose. He cannot gain it through the Indians and seeks it through the soldiers....but his band does not increase..." Interpreters Charles Primeau and Elias Agard have signed the document as well, stating that: "...The above is a true statement of what Chief Thunderhawk has just stated..." The hurried nature of the writing of the statement, including correction within the text, indicates that the document is original and not a contemporary copy. Very good.
