Description:

Sharps "New Model" 1863 cavalry carbine, .52 caliber, 22" barrel, 39" overall, fitted with a Lawrence Pellet Primer system. The serial number "C, 3532" appears on the top strap of the wrist, while the lockplate bears the patent mark "C. Sharps Pat Pct. 5th 1852", with "R.S. Lawrence Pat. April 12th 1859". The Sharps patent mark also appears on the opposite side of the frame. The maker's mark "Sharps Rifle Manufg. Co Hartford Conn." is visible at the top of the barrel just before the rear sight, with "New Model 1863" behind the sight. The base of the sight itself bears the patent mark "R.S. Lawrence patented Feb 15th 1859. The carbine shows several inspector's initials to the metal components. The metal retains much of its original browned finish overall, with oxidation and scattered shallow pitting also visible overall, primarily at the barrel. The saddle ring is missing from its retaining bar, and the underside of the forestock shows a crack running from the front of the frame to the front barrel band, tight overall but with the rear inch or so wide enough to expose an underlying screw. The breech mechanism functions as manufactured and closes securely, and the hammer cocks and fires strongly. The bore shows some grime and oxidation, but the rifling remains crisp with no apparent pitting. The markings are worn or slightly obscured by oxidation in several instances. NRA grade good to very good.
