Description:

Good example of a Colt Model 1855 Sidehammer Pocket revolver, sometimes called the "Root revolver" for Colt designer Elihu Root, .28 caliber, 3 1/2" barrel, 8" overall, marked with the serial number "25230" on the side of the cylinder, beneath the loading lever on the bottom face of the octagonal barrel, and on the bottom strap of the butt. The top face of the barrel is marked "Colt's Pt. 1855 Address Col. Colt Hartford CT USA", separated by Maltese crosses and with Colt's "pointing hand" motif. The cylinder is engraved with the "Cabin and Indian" scene found on earlier models of this weapon, well-worn and partially obscured by oxidation. A few traces of the original bluing remain, mostly in the grooves forward of the cylinder, in the sight channel and around the hammer where it is attached at the right-hand side of the frame. The metal components show a dull grey patina overall, with some oxidation primarily to the left-hand side of the frame and barrel, but with no accompanying pitting. The one-piece walnut grip shows traces of varnish behind the trigger, with a chip to the toe and a few additional scratches and dings. The bore shows strong rifling along its entire length with some minor grime or oxidation visible near the muzzle, but again with no apparent pitting. The hammer cocks and fires smartly. NRA grade: very good.
