Description:

Fine example of a .54-caliber Burnside cavalry carbine, 21" barrel, 39 1/2" overall, marked with the serial number "35854" on the breech block and the top of the frame before the breech. The top of the frame also bears the patent mark "Burnside's Patent. March 25th 1856", with the maker's mark "Burnside Rifle Co. Providence R.I." on the lockplate, and the top of the barrel faintly marked "Cast Steel". U.S. Army inspector's initials appear on the metal components throughout, and two inspector's cartouches appear on the left hand side of the butt at the wrist. The right-hand side of the butt bears the period incised initials "A.B." The hinged breech block mechanism functions as designed and latches securely, and the hammer cocks and fires strongly. The metal components show an even straw-colored patina overall with minimal spots of oxidation and no pitting, with handling marks to the stock and handguard commensurate with period use. The bore is notably clean for a firearm of this age, with perfect lands and grooves and no trace of oxidation or pitting. NRA grade fine or better. This carbine was designed by Union general Ambrose Burnside, and its popularity as the third-most widely used carbine of the war propelled his military career despite his notable failings at Fredericksburg, Spotsylvania and the Crater.
