Description:

Scarce uniform tunic displaying the insignia of a private of the "Russkaya osvoboditel'naya armiya" ("Russian Libertaion Army"), or ROA, a collaborationist force of primarily Russian volunteers which fought under the command of the Wehrmacht during World War II. The tunic is constructed of greenish-brown wool, closed at front with five pebbled metal buttons (with a sixth missing), and fitted with flap-covered pleated patch pockets at each breast and hip. The shoulders are each fitted with a slip-on shoulder strap of forest green wool with red piping, indicating the rank of private. The lapels each bear a collar tab of forest green wool with a silver brocade stripe, secured at one end with a pebbled metal button. The left-had sleeve bears with the embroidered insignia patch of the ROA, and the second button hole bears a medal ribbon of the War Merit Cross. The interior is lined with brown twill fabric, with a suspension tab on each side and internal pockets at the right hip and the left breast. The black ink stamp "43" appears above the interior breast pocket, likely the year of issue, corresponding with the ROA's official year of establishment. Beneath this stamp appear several additional black ink stamps, presenting sizing information and the partial name G[...] Ertzler (likely a manufacturer). The tunic shows period thread repairs to the right breast pocket, the rear of the left-hand sleeve at the shoulder and inside the collar, with small holes at the left-hand cuff and surrounding the interior breast pocket, with additional small moth nips and threadbare areas overall, else very good.
