Description:

An incredibly rare grouping of especially rare and evocative early-war U.S.M.C. camouflage clothing and helmet, the clothing identified to one Marine and in its original state as it left the jungles of the South Pacific. Included is a very rare, early M1 helmet, fixed bale with front seam, and a raised bar brass buckle fitted to the strap. The leather strap within is parted, and the leather sweatband is lost. The helmet is fitted with a twill-type camouflage cover, largely intact, which apparently was issued for only one year and saw use at Tarawa, Bougainville and in New Guinea. Present is a U.S.M.C. reversible camouflage jacket, four button snap closure front, with one chest pocket with Marine Corps stencil (appears on both sides) and open-top waist pocket. The jacket is also UNIS-marked "612" within a black diamond on the back, just beneath the owner's stenciled name: "L. SMITH". Smith's name is also stenciled in smaller letters on the inside collar. Smith's pants are also included, and especially impressive, showing extensive wear and stains and dirt consistent with severe battle or jungle conditions. This garment, with Smith's name stenciled twice with the same pattern as seen on the jacket, has three pockets and a fly which closes with snaps. Taken together, this group of relics appears to have been put away and left untouched since our Marine returned home. An especially evocative grouping.
