172. REGULAR ARMY SOLDIER'S GETTYSBURG CAMPAIGN LETTER A good war-date Union soldier's battle letter. 4pp. 8vo., written in ink by Pvt. Albert Knight, Co. F, 11th US Regular Infantry, Ashby's Gap, Va., July 22, 1863 to his mother concerning the epic campaign and battle of Gettysburg. In part: "...We shall meet Lee again and give him battle, which...will about use his Army up, and...fetching the war to a close, as we have Vicksburg, Port Hudson and...I will now give you a sketch of our march since we left Gum Springs. June 19: left camp at 4 p.m. and marched to Aldie...where we remained doing Picket duty until the 26th. We had some skirmishing with the Rebs and took a number of guerrillas prisoners. 26th: Left camp at 4 am...and marched through Leesburg...and crossed the Potomac at Edwards Ford... 29th: Left camp at 12 a.m. and marched 12 miles. 30th: left camp at 3 a.m. and marched 30 miles. July 1st left camp at 8 a.m. and marched to Hanover, Pa. 10 miles. Arrived 12 a.m. and left again at 6 p.m. and marched 9 miles to a small village where we slept all night. They would not sell us anything, but would give any thing we asked for. They were baking bread and pies for us all night. 2nd: left camp at 4 a.m. and marched 5 miles and met the Rebs near Gettysburg. Our Brigade went into action between 4 & 5 p.m. with 845 men and came out with some 350 men. My Reg. went in with 250 men and came out with 130 men and lost one Capt. and 10 Lieutenants. July 3rd: there has been a regular artillery fight all day, 36 batteries on our side firing and Smart Infantry fighting too. We have took a great many prisoners today. 4th: there has been skirmishing all day, but no regular engagement. 5th: the Rebs are in full retreat and we are after them...9th: left camp at 4 a.m. and marched over South Mountain to within 4 miles of Antietam. There is cannonading on our right this evening...10th: marched 9 miles and came up with enemy's picket about 6 miles from Williamsport. 11th: been out skirmishing all day. 12th: in camp all day...July 14th: the Rebs got across the river last night, we took a good number of prisoners this morning...17th: left camp at 3 p.m. and crossed the Potomac at Berlin, which is below Harpers Ferry...23rd: left camp at 5 a.m. and marched into Manassas Gap. There has been some skirmishing today...24th: the Rebs left last night. We took a number of prisoners...and marched to Warrington...they say that we are going to stop here a spell to recruit up...for we have been on the move since June 5th. I saw A. Moody and Jariel Cross and Fred C. the 23rd...". Knight enlisted in 1862 and was engaged at Antietam, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg and on the North Ann where he was captured while a member of the regiment's color guard.
