Description:

"PROTECTION ENGINE" BROADSIDE
A great nineteenth-century printed broadside titled "Protection Engine Who would not buy a Fire Engine? Only $50! Manufactured by Cowing & Co. of Seneca Falls, N.Y.. The broadside measures 6" x 10 1/2" (sight), and is adorned with an image of the hand-crank fire engine ideal for the "...Country Gentleman, Farmer and Gardner...and just the thing needed...". It further claims that "...it can be brought into service so quick, and will throw a 3/8 inch stream of water eighty-five feet horizontally...with the power of ONE MAN!...". More humorous (by today's standards) commentary on the worth of this unique machine which boasts, among other things, its usefulness for watering the garden, washing windows, and so forth! Light glue stains, else very good condition, handsomely matted and set into a dark wood frame. A neat piece of Americana, not examined out of frame.
