NAVAL SURGEON DESCRIBES THE LEPERS OF MOLOKAI
Rare naval chaplain's A.L.S., 3pp. 4to., "Frank B. Rose", on "U. S. Flag Ship "Pensacola", North Pacific Station stationery, Molokai, Hawaiian Islands, Feb. 1, 1878 to a doctor who attended his dying son. In part: "Yesterday we left Honolulu cruising after a vessel lately wrecked on one of these island with nearly 400 poor Chinese aboard…we had to put to sea &…we have found the vessel (which is a total wreck) & we have over 200 wrecked Chinese to take on board in the morning, the remainder having been picked up by two passing schooners. The island off which we lie is the enforced home of the lepers of the Hawaiian Islands. There is a colony here of 700 of these helpless hopeless people isolated & supported by the Hawaiian Gov't. & the number is being constantly assisted…from this Ocean waste I send lovingly [&] brotherly greetings to you…". Light soiling, else very good.
