Description:

1858 PAMPHLET ON THE RULES OF DUELING
An interesting pamphlet entitled "The Code of Honor; or, Rules for the Government of Principals and Seconds in Dueling ", published by James Phinney, 1858, soft-bound, second edition. This 48pp. 8vo. size volume was written by John Lyde Wilson (1784-1849) former governor of South Carolina, and originally published in 1838. Before his death, Wilson added an appendix of the 1777 Irish dueling code, published in the expanded work offered here. In the author's preface to the work, he states that the volume does not constitute an endorsement of the practice, as there are other non-violent remedies for personal disputes. However, should dueling prevail, a code of honor for dueling should be instituted and abided by. The table of contents reads, in part: "Chapter I, The Person Insulted Before Challenge Sent...Chapter II, The Party Receiving a Note Before the Challenge...Chapter III, Duty of Challenges and His Second Before Fighting...", up to Chapter VIII, which stipulates "...The Degrees of Insurnt and How Compromised...". Chipping to edges, light foxing and staining, overall very good condition. Handsomely matted and housed in a custom archival frame so that the pamphlet can be easily removed from the verso. An intriguing, and indeed late, commentary on an old-school method of retribution.
