PROMOTION AND APPOINTMENT DOCUMENTS OF SS-GRUPPENFUHRER WILLY SCHMELCHER
Good pair of documents related to the career of WILLY SCHMELCHER (1894-1974), SS-Gruppenfuhrer and Lieutenant-General of the Police. After the German attack on the Soviet Union Schmelcher was active from mid-November 1941 to early July 1943 as SS- and Police Leader (SSPF) in Chernigov and also SSPF in Shitomir from May 1943 to the end of September 1943. Includes: Typed D.S., 1p. 4to., [n.p.], Jan. 6, 1945, an official order issued by the office of Reichsfuhrer-SS Heinrich Himmler, appointing Schmelcher the "SS- un Polizeifuihrer" ("SS and Police Leader") for the "gau" ("territory") of Wartheland in occupied Poland. The form bears the stamp of the Reochsfuhrer-SS and the initials of an unidentified representative within that office at the conclusion, with a blind-embossed seal at upper left. Shows a contemporary grease pencil inscriptions and other marks, with file holes at the left edge, else very good. WITH: An earlier partly-printed document, 1p. oblong 8vo., Munich, Dec. 24, 1932, an order issued by the SS personnel office commissioning SS-Sturmbannfuhrer Schmelcher as leader of the "10. SS-Standarte", in which capacity he would serve until 1935. He replaced future Dachau concentration camp comandante Theodor Eicke, who had been arrested and convicted for his role in a plot to bomb political opponents. Shows file holes at the left edge, else very good. Two pieces.
