Description:

PIERRE-AUGUSTE RENOIR
(1841 - 1919) French painter and, with Monet, a leader of the Impressionists. He later changed his style, adopting a more formal perspective. A.L.S. 1p., 12mo., [n.p.], Aug.15, 1887, in Frenchto an unknown recipient granting him permission to publish his reproduction of Renoir's work. In part: "...I find that the reproduction of my drawing is very excellent. You can publish it if you want. I've no opposition against it. As you are for the moment in Dieppe and that you will probably see Jacques Blanche there give him my greetings please and to his mother...". Boldly signed "Renoir". Renoir's mention of Blanche illustrates the extent of his relationship to the young painter and his family. Jacques-Emile Blanche, son of famed psychiatrist Emile Blanche, and his mother would often entertain Renoir at their family home in Dieppe, where Renoir had given the young Blanche painting lessons. While Renoir clearly enjoyed his relationship with the Blanche family, letters from Madame Blanche reveal less-than reciprocal feelings in a July 1881 letter published in the volume Renoir: A Retrospective, ed. Nicholas Wadley (New York: Hugh Lauter Levin Associates, 1987): "...[Renoir] gets so carried away...completely uneducated...If I had thought he was going to be a permanent fixture here and not just staying for five or six days, I might have lost my self-control since all his twitches at table and his conversations at dinner have had just as bad an effect on Nanny as on me...". Slight toning and central fold with slight showthrough of mounting adhesive at top. Beautifully presented in a gilt frame against ivory matting next to a color reproduction of Renoir's Self Portrait With a White Hat.
