Description:

FREDERIC REMINGTON
(1861 - 1909) American painter, illustrator and artist remembered for his works based on western themes, most notably his sculpture Broncho Buster and his paintings Last Stand and A Dash For the Timber. Amusing original ink drawing by Remington occupying most of a 4to. sheet, Stephenville, Newfoundland, Canada, 190[?], obviously a "fish tale" and captioned by Remington as "A salmon story" at bottom. It shows an image of two fisherman, one with a gaff, with one fisherman obviously believing he has hooked a gigantic salmon putting up a fierce fight. The "truth" is illustrated at lower-right and captioned "Remark": the disappointed fisherman examines his mediocre fish, held up by his assistant. No doubt Remington was the unlucky fisherman in the story! Captioned in another hand at top: "Drawn by Frederic Remington when we took a trip with him to New Foundland". Lightly toned and a bit brittle, a few marginal tears archivally repaired on verso, toned spot at upper-center and right margin, still a great display piece!
