Description:

GUTZON BORGLUM
(1871 - 1941) American sculptor and artist responsible for the sculpting of Mount Rushmore, as well as the commencement of the Confederate memorial at Stone Mountain. Fine content T.L.S. signed in full three times on Mount Rushmore National Memorial Commission letterhead, 1p. 4to., Mount Rushmore, Oct. 3, 1934, while Borglum was still hard at work on his monumental project. The great sculptor writes F. C. Farham proposing terms to extend a contract and negotiating an additional set of 50,000 castings of ""heads", for which he will receive 35 cents each for small busts, and $1.00 each for sets of bookends. Apparently, the deal was struck, as both Franham and Borglum sign each clause. Folds, light soiling, else very good. It is important to remember that the opening of Mount Rushmore had been anticipated for some time: the press and newsreels kept the American public abreast of progress on the monument for some time. A wise businessman, Borglum anticipated the hoopla, and was prepared for the onslaught of tourists...and tourist dollars available to buy souvenirs!
