A terrific grouping of materials from transport officer Lt. James D. Bowlby covering his entire service with the 42nd Regiment, from draft notice to his release from the service, with outstanding photographs of the Chancellery and other Berlin landmarks shortly after the Russians captured the city. The large album contains every significant personal document issued to Bowlby, who served as Rail Traffic Officer and supervised all rail traffic to and from the Frankfurt area. Included is his induction notice and photos, dog tags, permits and passes, orders to O.C.S., diplomas, certificates, assignments, assignments, orders, separation papers, etc. Present also is a letter of thanks from British Major Gen. DOUGLAS STUART and a certificate signed by Gen. GEOFFREY KEYES (1888–1967), chief aide to Patton who planned the invasions of Morocco and Sicily. Also included are 25 small photos from France, 33 from Frankfurt, 18 from Antwerp, and 21 from the SS THOMAS SUMTER upon his return to England. The most impressive part of the collection is a grouping of 27 photos showing scenes of devastated Berlin, emphasizing buildings central to the Nazi government. A large, hand-captioned photo shows an entrance to the Fuhrerbunker, with other photos showing different views of the ruined chancellery, "Hitler's Balcony", the Tiergarten, Brandenburg Gate, American Embassy, a memorial with the first Russian tank to enter the city, and various other scenes of devastation. Excellent condition.
