Description:

Fine photo album compiled by an Imperial Japanese Navy aviator, 48pp. oblong 4to., containing 54 b/w photos, most approx. 10" x 5" or smaller, depicting his prewar aviation training and aerial operations. The group includes two class photos, showing officers and enlisted men in naval dress white uniforms, with one also showing aviators in their flying gear. Many additional images show aviators in flying gear standing before biplane trainers in full flight gear, with one large image showing waiting pilots in an airfield hut with a roster board visible at bottom. One particularly fine sequence of photos shows a line of Mitsubishi Ki-21 "Sally" bombers on an airfield, bombs being loaded aboard the aircraft, the planes in flight, and an excellent shot of the bombers in formation with the aircraft in the foreground dropping a bomb. Additional aircraft depicted in these pages include the Kyushu K10 "Oak" trainer, the Mitsubishi A5M "Claude" fighter, and several unidentified biplane trainers, all in a naval grey color scheme. One small photo of two airmen bears the date "1931", but the aircraft depicted date most of the images closer to 1938 and later. The covers of the album show notable soiling and wear, with some toning to the interior pages and minor silvering and fading to a few images, very good overall. Worthy of further research.
