Description:

PENNSYLVANIA "BUCKTAIL" WRITES ON REBELS POISONING THE FEDERAL'S WATER SUPPLY
Interesting A.L.S. of Joseph Schelly, 1st Pa., Company F of Kane's rifle regiment, the original "Bucktails", 3pp. 8vo., Hyattstown, Aug. 24, 1861, on patriotic letterhead with a comic illustration of "old eagle" General Scott biting the neck of chicken hawk Jefferson Davis. To his family, in part: "...We have moved hither since my last letter and we find ourselves all well in the regiment save for a few where the attempt was made to poison them by administering strychnine to them in milk and water, etc. but the perpetrators have all been shot we had encamped at a place called Buckeystown about 6 miles from here where a rebel attempted to poison a spring of the second Wisconsin regiment but he was arrested by the guards and tried and shot the next day following. The 5th Connecticut regiment had several of their number poisoned and one of them died as he was beyond reach also the New York 19th regiment - had 18 of their number killed by administering of strychnine a man now-a-days must be very careful where he gets anything to eat or drink from the cursed seseshers as they are very apt to seek the life of the Federal soldiers. I like a soldiers life pretty well. I get plenty to eat drink and wear and besides the 15 a month in gold or silver...Yours until death Jos. Schelly". With original colorful patriotic cover, overall very good condition.
