17TH VERMONT AT SPOTSYLVANIA LETTER WITH GRAPHIC CONTENT
Fine content A.L.S. by Gustavus Gould, Co. E 17th Vt. Infty, 4pp. 8vo., "Washington D C Mount Pleasant Hospittle", May 17, 1864. Gould enlisted in Feb. 1864 and less than three months later, the 17th Vt. was rushed into hard service, finding themselves in the Wilderness and Spotsylvania Battles with over 150 casualties. Gould suffered from rheumatism in his back and hips and writes, in pencil, to his family while being treated (spelling and grammar not corrected). In part: "...I take this opertunity to rite a few lines to you to let you know that I am well...I came hear last Sunday on a count of rumitiz...it is a splendid plase hear I have a good bed...I will tell you about the 17th regiment we was rushed right on to the front without driling at atall I never was drild but 3 times in my life. Well the regiment was vary badly cut up I will name a few that was killd in my company or ordaly sargent was kild he was shot through the hart his name was Gould thesame man that inlisted me William Howland was shot through his legs and died from his wound....Corprel Carson was killd shot through the hed and brest thare was lots and lots wonded in the company the old made cornal...god a slite touch in the hed the rest of the companys war cut up as bad as ours this is the greatest fight that has ever been fought this is the 17 day thay have been at it I have seen some hard sights since I came hear I saw five hundred men wondid that was fetched of from the battle field all lay tare in a pile sum with thair legs of[f] and sum...wonded in the hed that was hit in all places thay had to lay thare till the next morning then thay wer carried to Fredericksburg from thare to Belle Plane then we took shipping and came hear to Washington a good menny of them dide [died] from thar wounds I have seen sum rought times we hav been on the move ever sinc we hav been out hear and I awl had to eat was hard tack and raw pork not half a enough of that the day before I left the regiment we marcht awl day this was sunday night we lay behind our brest works we was the 2nd line you beter believe the shel and miney balls flew over us in a hurrie the next morning I was sent to the rheer and hav been sent on hear to Washington I hav got in to good quarters now thare is sum talk about the boys that is not fit for duty being sent thair own stats [states] but I don't no what it is...".
