Description:

1059. ANNIE OAKLEY (1860 - 1926) American trick shot specialist able to outshoot any rival, she toured with Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show from 1885 to 1902 and was one of Cody's prime attractions. An outstanding Oakley "shot" relic, a 1919 Lincoln head penny, bent about thirty degrees and bearing an indentation at one edge consistent with being struck by a small caliber bullet. The penny is attached with a white cord to the letterhead of The Carolina Hotel, Pinehurst, NC, boldly signed: "Congratulations Annie Oakley". The penny still retains what appears to be a tiny trace of lead, and the indentation approximates that made by a .22 bullet, a round favored by Oakley in her performances. Oakley and her husband Frank often performed at The Carolina Hotel. With a ca. 1950 note of provenance on a scrap of paper: "Shot by Annie Oakley Pinehurst about 1920". $3,000 - 4,000
