1058. BRIGHAM YOUNG (1801 - 1877) Leader of the Mormon church who succeeded Joseph Smith as head of the church and led the mass migration to Salt Lake Valley. Young was also the first governor of Utah Territory. Important partly-printed D.S. "Brigham Young", 1p. oblong 12mo., Salt Lake City, Jan. 17, 1873, a check issued by Young's Utah Southern Railroad Company in the amount of $65.52 made payable to "T. R. Jones or bearer" citing "Repair Passenger Cars, Running Dept.". Signed by Young as President, and by GEORGE SWAN as Secretary. Near fine condition. Young established the railroad in order to connect Mormon communities in the southern part of the state with the capitol at Salt Lake.           $2,000 - 3,000
