Description:

NAPOLEON BONAPARTE
(1769 - 1821) The "Little Corporal" whose brilliance in the field of battle and as Emperor of France has made him perhaps the most important figure of post-Renaissance Europe. Fine content manuscript L.S. "NP", 1p. 4to., [n.p.], an angry letter to the Comte de Cessac. In part: "...I told you to send a War Department officer or commissioner to visit the [cavalry] remount centers of the Grande Armee. If I had wanted one of my ordnance officers to make this inspection, I would have sent him [myself] -- I find it extraordinary that the Commander of the Depots in Hanover hasn't written anything to you. I don't think for a moment that at the present time there are 12,000 horses in the remount centers...". Very good. In his memoirs, the Baron de Marbot, a general, noted that Napoleon had spent part of 1812 in gathering and organizing equipment for an offensive, but blames the Count de Cessac for disorganization, adding: "...no regiment got the clothes intended for it. The conduct of our administrators in this matter deserves to be noticed...".

Provenance: Napoleon rails at the Chief Administrator of the War Department
