Description:

JOSEPH BONAPARTE
(1768 - 1844) Elder brother of Napoleon, who made him King of Naples and Sicily (1806-1808) and later King of Spain. A.E.S. "Bonaparte" at the head of a letter sent to Minister of War LOUIS-ALEXANDRE BERTHIER from veteran officer Charles Aubourg-Boury, 1p. large 4to., Boury, [n.d., 1803]. The father of ten finds himself in financial straits and asks that two years' worth of pension payments which are in arrears be paid to him, an "old soldier", as soon as possible. At top left, Bonaparte asks that Berthier familiarizes himself with Citizen Boury's case, mentioning that he has a strong interest in the man's welfare. Berthier also endorses the letter, possibly paying the pension, and initials his note "B". Soiled slightly at margins, else very good.
