Description:

N.S.D.A.P. FLAG FROM HEINRICH HIMMLER'S HOME
A startling find, a 26 x 18 in. N.S.D.A.P. flag taken by an American G.I. from the summer home of Heinrich Himmler, 'Velep', in Tegernsee. The two-piece, two-sided rayon flag has a circular white disc with a printed black swastika sewn to the red field. The left side has been rolled over and sewn allowing the flag to be suspended vertically for display. There is a small, worn hole and some threads pulled along the hoist, otherwise, the flag is in fine condition. The flag was obtained by PFC Joseph H. Rose of HQ Company, 1st Battalion, 141st Infantry Regiment, 36th Infantry Div. who served as a translator. In a notecard typed by Rose approx. thirty years ago (copy included), he notes that he obtained this flag and a book (also offered in this sale) from Himmler's house, as well as stationery from Gudrun Himmler, Himmler's daughter, on May 4, 1945 when the home was occupied solely by Himmler's wife and daughter. Also included in the lot are: copies of the upper parts of two letters written by Rose on Gudrun Himmler's personal letterhead from Austria on May 10 and 12, 1945, after he had moved on from the scene, a May 26, 1994 article from the Fredericksburg, Va. Free Lance-Star briefly describing his brief encounter with the family and an original letter of provenance from Rose's niece. A superlative military relic of great importance.
