ALEXANDER MCDOUGALL (1731 - 1786) Revolutionary major general whose early patriotic writings landed him in jail, later a street leader and principal actor in the revolutionary movement. Appointed major general to assume command of West Point and environs following the flight of Benedict Arnold. War-date A.L.S. "Alex McDougall ", 1p. legal folio, Peekskill, Jan. 17, 1779, to quartermaster Nicholas Quakenbush at Albany informing the latter (in most dramatic manner) that "I am without Curry Comb or brush to Clean my Horses, and there is neither of those articles in the Store here; nor have I one bridle, if it would save the Country from destruction. I have therefore to request you to send me two Bridles if they can be procured at any rate, and a Curry Comb & brush...". Usual creases, tape marks at corners, otherwise very good. $600-800
