LEVI LINCOLN AND JOHN HANCOCK: JOHN HANCOCK (1737-1793) American Revolutionary politician and first signer of the Declaration of Independence, President of the Continental Congress and two-time Governor of Massachusetts. A fine association of patriots, Hancock's Autograph Endorsement docketed on the verso of a letter to him written by LEVI LINCOLN (1782 - 1868) American politician, Jefferson's Attorney General and Governor of Massachusetts, 1p. 4to., Boston, May 27, 1782 in which Lincoln offers his resignation as Judge of Probate: In part: "...His Excellency John Hancock Esq., in Council...The Judge of Probate for the County of Worcester is under a necessity of resigning an Office, the duties of which, interfering with his other engagements, he can no longer discharge with reputation to himself or proper attention...has rendered his Office totally incompatible with the business of his profession..." On verso Hancock, the Governor, dockets the letter: "Levi Lincolns Letter of Resignation of the office of Judge of Probate ". A few light stains, folds, generally very good. ­$600-800
