MARTIN VAN BUREN
(1782 - 1862) Eighth President of the United States, Secretary of State and a close ally of Andrew Jackson. A.L.S. as Vice President and presidential candidate, 2pp. 4to., Washington, Mar. 14, 1836 to Erastus Corning. In part: "...My friend Mr. Talmadge of Georgia visits our section of the Union in the hope of obtaining subscriptions for a University of Learning in his state...our certain friends have been heretofore very liberal in respect to similar applications...I sincerely hope that Mr. Talmadge will be able to report on his return the existence of approval[?] spent on our part...". Near fine. Erastus Corning was a very prominent New York businessman and railroad president, and the first president of the New York Central. The Talmadge referred to by Van Buren is likely John Talmadge, a founder of the Georgia political dynasty.
