Description:

MARTIN VAN BUREN
(1782 - 1862) Eighth President of the United States, Secretary of State and a close ally of Andrew Jackson. Partly-printed D.S. as Secretary of State, 1p. folio parchment, Washington, Jan. 4, 1830, a scallop-top ship's paper issued to the "Ship Hercules of New Bedford", a vessel of 290 tons with a crew of 23 men, boldly signed by Van Buren as Secretary of State at bottom. A "vandal/idiot" years ago removed President Andrew Jackson's signature from the document, yet the area could be re-backed and the document would again be quite presentable as Van Buren's signature is quite bold.
