MARTIN VAN BUREN
(1782 - 1862) Eighth President of the United States, Secretary of State and a close ally of Andrew Jackson. Uncommon and fine association partly-printed D.S. as President, 1p. folio, Washington, July 10, 1838, an appointment of Joseph P. Taylor as "...Commissary of Subsistence, with the rank of Quartermaster...". Joseph Pannel Taylor, the brother of President Zachary Taylor, served in both the War of 1812 as well as the Mexican War, where he was brevetted colonel for his services during the latter. At the opening of the Civil War, he held the rank of Brigadier General in the commissary department. Light uneven toning, usual folds, else very good condition. From the B. T. Fredericks Collection.
