Description:

JOHN MARSTON (1884 - 1957) American Marine Corps general during World War II, best known as the commanding general of the 2nd Marine Division at Guadalcanal and the commanding general of the 1st Provisional Marine Brigade during the Occupation of Iceland. Marston later was appointed Commanding General of Department of the Pacific, succeeding Major General William P. Upshur. His U.S. Marine Corps, Green Service Coat, constructed of green twill, closed at the front by three 'eagle, globe and anchor' buttons and one smaller composite button. Each shoulder strap bears two frosted sterling silver pebbled general's stars, and the lapels bear a matching pair of WWII-period, officer's style eagle, globe and anchor insignia. All buttons are present and properly hallmarked. There is an integral sewn-in waist belt with a proper style brass buckle. The left upper sleeve appears to have once held a sewn-on insignia patch, and each sleeve cuff has the proper scallop design for a Marine. An interior slash pocket within the rayon lining has a typical paper name tag, bearing the printed name 'J. Marston' and date '7-2-43'. Sewn on the outside of this pocket is a large tailor's tag that reads: 'Since 1918, A.M. Bolognese & Sons, Incorporated, Tailor-and-Haberdasher Quantico, Virginia'. According to our consigner, this uniform was given to Alfred Bolognese by the estate of General John Seymour Letcher, the son-in-law of General Marston. A stapled paper tag inside the coat, likely a cleaner's tag, bears the name 'J.S. Letcher' as additional proof of provenance. Fine condition, and very desirable. This uniform includes four pages of biographical career information on General Marston. From a major private collection on public display.
